Our story

Stewards of the world's oldest complete Bible.

Tewahedo Press exists to bring the 81 book canon of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church to modern English readers, printed with the craftsmanship the text deserves.

Why this canon

For nearly 1,700 years, the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has preserved the most complete biblical canon in Christendom. While other Christian traditions standardized to 66 books, Ethiopian monasteries from Lalibela to Debre Damo to Tana Qirqos quietly continued to copy, bind, and read the original Ge'ez manuscripts that the early Church had used in worship.

Among the 14 additional books are the Book of Enoch, directly quoted by Jude in the New Testament (Jude 1:14 to 15), and the Book of Jubilees, an angelic retelling of Genesis and Exodus. These texts are not eccentric. They are foundational, and they were lost to most of Christianity only by accident of language and geography.

Why this edition

For most of the 20th century, an English reader who wanted to access the Ethiopian canon had to assemble it from scattered scholarly editions, mismatched translations, and second hand books, or read it in Ge'ez, which is a liturgical language that requires years of study.

Our goal was simple: produce one volume containing all 81 books, translated into clear, modern English from the original Ge'ez, with translator footnotes where the Ethiopian text diverges from the Greek or Hebrew. We worked with Ethiopian Orthodox scholars and partnered with a third generation family bindery to print it on Bible grade paper, Smyth sewn for durability.

The first edition went to press in October 2024. As of this year we have shipped to 38 countries on six continents.

How we work

What we give back

A portion of every Bible sold supports Ethiopian Orthodox manuscript conservation, including digitization projects at the Hill Museum and Manuscript Library and the Ethiopian Manuscript Microfilm Library. We believe the texts we publish should also be preserved at their source.

"We aren't reinventing the Ethiopian Bible. We're carrying a 1,700 year old text across a translation bridge, and printing it well enough that the next generation will want to keep it."
